How should supply chain employers reference-check staff?
Planners, buyers and analysts shape stock, spend and service levels. Their references should ask about that work, not just dates.

What should supply chain references cover?
Supply chain references should confirm dates and job title, then ask about the work itself: planning and forecasting accuracy, systems used, supplier and stakeholder relationships, handling of disruption, and, for buyers, commercial judgement and integrity. RefAssure sends your questions to each referee with the candidate's signed consent, chases automatically and returns a signed PDF with a full audit trail.
Employee references or supplier references?
"Supply chain references" means two different things, so it is worth being clear which you need.
Supplier references are part of vetting a business you might buy from: asking other customers whether the supplier delivered on time, to quality and on contract terms. That sits with procurement and supplier onboarding, usually alongside financial checks and questionnaires.
Employee references are about a person you want to hire into your supply chain team: a demand planner, inventory controller, transport planner, buyer, warehouse manager or S&OP lead. This page covers those. RefAssure is built for employment references: candidate consent, referee requests, automatic chasing and a signed report.
The two overlap in one place. If you are hiring a buyer or procurement manager, their past dealings with suppliers matter. A good reference asks about it directly.
What to ask, role by role.
Add these to your template once and every request uses them.
Planners and forecasters
Forecast accuracy, how they used data, the planning tools they ran day to day, and how they balanced stock against service.
Buyers and procurement
Negotiation results, supplier relationships, adherence to purchasing policy, and any conflicts of interest or concerns about gifts and hospitality.
Systems and analysts
Which ERP, WMS or planning systems they used, how confident they were, and whether others relied on their reports.
Handling disruption
How they responded when a supplier failed, a lane closed or demand spiked. Ask for a real example.
Leading teams
For warehouse and transport leads: managing shifts, safety culture, absence and agency labour.
The closing question
Would you employ them again in a similar role? A short yes or no with a reason tells you a lot.

Supply chain reference questions
More in the full FAQs.
How many references should I get for a supply chain role?
Two is common: the current or most recent manager and one earlier employer. For senior buyers or managers with budget authority, some employers ask for a third covering a longer period.
Can I ask about a buyer's integrity?
Yes, as long as the question is factual and fair. Ask whether there were any concerns about conflicts of interest or breaches of purchasing policy. The referee should answer honestly and accurately, and the candidate consents before anyone is contacted. See candidate consent.
What if the referee just confirms dates?
Some employers have a policy of giving factual references. That still verifies employment history. If you need more, add a second referee such as a former line manager who has left that employer.
Does RefAssure check suppliers?
No. RefAssure collects employment references about people. Supplier vetting needs a different process run by procurement.
How quickly do references come back?
The median across 229 completed references was about 23 hours, and half were done within 24 hours. The rest are chased automatically until day 12.
How much does it cost?
Your first reference is free. After that, credits cost from 99p down to 80p each, with no monthly fee and no VAT added. See pricing.
